Great Bay Masters 2nd at Harvard
GREAT BAY SECOND AT NEW ENGLAND MASTERS 2003 25-YARD CHAMPIONSHIP,
EXTREMELY CLOSE CONTEST:
Nearly 80 Great Bay Masters swimmers competed at the New England Masters 2003 25-Yard Championship at Harvard University. The four-day event spanned two weekends. On Saturday 3/22 the 1000 and 1650 freestyle were contested, with all shorter events and relays occurring the following Friday through Sunday. Harvard University’s Blodgett Pool is one of the premier facilities in New England. The water is fast, and all 726 swimmers entered in the meet found plenty of space to relax between races.
This was a fun and exciting contest that went right down to the wire. Cambridge opened a 293-point lead on the distance day, Saturday 3/22. Great Bay began whittling away at the lead during the remaining three days (Friday through Sunday). After Friday the gap stood at 285, and at Saturday’s conclusion it was down to 153. On Sunday the gap closed to within 110 points at mid-day. Cambridge rallied back a little at the end of the day, winning by just 218 points. Here are final results for the top five teams:

GREAT
BAY’s TEAM EFFORT THE KEY TO SUCCESS
Cambridge Masters had 102 swimmers entered in the meet, while Great Bay had only 79. How did Great Bay make it such a close contest? Teamwork! Many Great Bay swimmers focused less on their individual success and more on scoring points for the team. Another key factor was Great Bay’s relay swimming. No other team matches Great Bay’s relatively uniform age distribution, with swimmers from 19 to 79 swimming with us at Harvard.
