The Hour Swim is a USMS event where swim as far as you can during an hour. Swimmers can do any stroke, change strokes during the swim, stop and rest, and even get out before the hour is through. Those who just can't relate to distance swimming have done it as a set instead of a long straight swim (60 x 50 @ 1:00, for example).
Masters swimmers span a broad age range and both genders. How does one person's hour swim distance measure up to another's? Here is one attempt to establish a fair rating factor. On the graph presented below, the USMS Hour Swim record distance is plotted against the minimum age of each age group. A parabola is fit to the men's records, and to the women's records. Each curve represents a theoretical "100%" rating distance for all ages. The Hour Swim Rating equations follow:
Hour Swim Rating (men) = (your yardage) / (5493.1076 + 36.4825 * (your age) -
0.7612 * (your age)2)
Hour Swim Rating (women) = (your yardage) / (5377.4586 + 24.1911 * (your age) - 0.6790 * (your age)2 )
