Great Bay Masters host Successful NELMSC SCM Championship Great Bay Swimmers do well at the meet SUCCESSFUL MEET: Great Bay Masters hosted a successful meet at Boston University, December 12-14. The NELMSC 25-Meter Championship drew 588 entrants, and 538 swam at the meet. This is likely the second largest masters meet for the 25-meter course held on US soil. The largest is the Pan Pacific Championship, an international meet held in Indianapolis in 1989 with 1250 swimmers. GREAT BAY MASTERS SWIM WELL: Great Bay Masters swam well, establishing 27 new club records for individual swims, and 5 new relay records. In addition the relay team of Kirk Larsen, Ed Gendreau, Jim Robertson and Guy Davis set New England records in the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay for the 160-199 age bracket. See bottom of this page from GBM team records set. Complete meet results are posted on the meet web page. TEAM CONTEST: Great Bay Masters competed in the Non-NEM USMS Club division. Maine Masters was first with 2782 points, Great Bay second (1740.5) and the FISH Masters from New York were third (1389.5). There is usually a good correlation between the number of 'splashes' (individual races swum) and points scored - and this year was no exception:
swimmers splashes actual actual team points per
entered entered swimmers splashes points splash
Maine 35 226 29 182 2782 15.3
GBM 34 162 24 113 1740.5 15.4
FISH 14 106 14 97 1389.5 14.3
'BORDER DUEL IN THE POOL', Great Bay vs. Maine Masters: Maine Masters has come up with a great new idea - The 'Border Duel in the Pool' for the SCM Championship Meet, with a special trophy to be awarded to Maine or GBM each year (see below). Maine is giving Great Bay retroactive credit for winning 1998 through 2006. Maine has done a great job building their club and has taken the 'Border Duel in the Pool' in 2007 and 2008. Great Bay needs to get more swimmers to the Championship meets in order to challenge Maine for the top spot. More swimmers = more splashes = possible bragging rights for Great Bay. This is a fun rivalry, Maine is clearly the top dog now - can Great Bay bounce back? Stay tuned! |
