Great Bay Masters hosted the NELMSC SCM (25-meter pool) Championship at Boston University December 14 to 16, 2007. It was a successful meet with 559 entrants, making it one of the largest 25-meter pool masters meets ever held in the United States.

Congratulations to the GBM"s who swam the BU meet and helped with our team effort there. There were 40 Great Bay Masters individuals club records set, and 5 relay records (see below). Congratulations to our female and male high point scorers, Jana Slezak and Jim Robertson. The meet was a fun event, we hope to see more GBM"s at future championship meets.

Anatomy of an Upset

Great Bay Masters achieved first place at the 25-meter New England championship in 1999, and was first in our category at this meet through 2006 (that’s eight straight years!). Maine Masters has been on the rise, and openly declared their intent to unseat GBM at the 2007 SCM Championship.

Things looked good for GBM going in to the meet: Maine Masters had 28 swimmers and 169 splashes entered in the meet while GBM had 42 swimmers and 183 splashes. (A splash is one individual event swim). This was a good meet entry for GBM and a turning point for our declining meet numbers in recent years.

But, that"s why they play the game, as the saying goes. Maine crushed GBM in the final team scoring: 2056 to 1400. Maine was able to upset GBM because more of their swimmers entered actually swam the meet - MESC 25 swimmers, 130 splashes, 12 relays; GBM 22 swimmers, 88 splashes, 10 relays.
