GBM's first ever relay at a masters national meet: Ed Gendreau, Atie Caron, Julia Malloy and Paul Griffin |

Great Bay Masters at SCY Masters Nationals, Coral Springs FL by Ed Gendreau Great Bay Masters had a good showing at the 2006 Masters Nationals, May 11 to 14. Our team was represented by four swimmers, who scored 52 points, placing 87th of 134 teams in combined scoring. All of these are milestones for Great Bay Masters. Another milestone for Great Bay Masters was our first ever relay swim at a Masters Nationals. Paul Griffin (back), Atie Caron (breast), Julia Malloy (fly) and Ed Gendreau (free) placed 18th in the 200 medley relay, 35-44 age category. The age distribution of our relay swimmers was not optimal for the yards relay age category, where the youngest swimmer determines the age group. However we had a fun race and the team spirit was definitely there. The meet itself was well run, we enjoyed the sunny and warm weather at the outdoor facility. The meet was lightly attended by Masters Nationals standards, resulting in short timelines and plenty of room in the warm-up / warm-down pools, and for lounging around between races. Attending a Masters Nationals typically requires an investment in both time and money (travel) for us New England based masters swimmers. The meet can be well worth it for a variety of reasons. Attending a distant event with an important title can create some more race excitement and better swims. At Masters Nationals you can swim a maximum of six individual events and not more than three events per day. For those of us who generally swim a lot more events at our local championship meets, we can have more energy when we focus on fewer events. There are several GBM's who have already marked the 2007 SCY National Meet on there calendars. Give it some thought, it could be well worth the trip: May 17-20, 2007; Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center; Federal Way, Washington GBM TEAM RECORDS: GBM RECORDS (13) NAT PLACE REMAINING SWIMS: 50 Breast Paul Griffin 32.02 45 45-49 20 100 Breast Paul Griffin 1:10.51 45 45-49 23 200 Breast Paul Griffin 2:36.54 45 45-49 15 100 Breast Aagje Caron 1:41.00 64 60-64 9 200 Breast Aagje Caron 3:33.63 64 60-64 6 500 Free Aagje Caron 7:58.38 64 60-64 8 100 Fly Aagje Caron 1:48.93 64 60-64 8 400 IM Aagje Caron 7:15.79 64 60-64 5 We look forward to our upcoming events: the Mashpee 1 mile / 3.1 mile swims (you pick your distance) on June 25; the summer meet at the Jenny Thompson Pool, July 23.
