Most of the Saturday GBM’s who swam at Wheaton
For the first year ever, we competed not only in a New England LMSC Championship meet, but in a Colonies Zone SCM Championship under our own club rather than a work-out group.
The Meet took place over three days, with the first day devoted to the 800 M Free Championship, an event separate from the Shorter Colonies Zone events that were swum on Saturday and Sunday.
A total of 47 Great Bay Masters put aside their holiday preparations and traveled down to Norton, MA to swim on all three days. Thankfully, the weather was cooperative with a cool yet dry and sunny day which made driving easy. Although Great Bay Masters came in second place as a club ranking (after New England Masters), we dominated the meet, scoring over 500 more points than the next closest workout group or club. Minutemen Masters took first place as the workout group, winning their first title ever. Andover Masters came in second and Cambridge Masters came in third place. This showed an impressive effort as a group as our numbers at Wheaton were less than previous years. Many team members entered and swam the maximum number of events each day, entering events where they could score a lot of points as well as swimming over both days. This contributed to our high point scoring and overall success of the team despite lower numbers than in previous years.
Three Masters World Records were set and 5 National Records were set at the meet, along with some Great Bay swimmers setting new Zone records. All in all, it was an exciting and well-run meet.
Thank you to all the people who made the meet a success, including the following:
Meet management: John Barbary, Harold Whitney, Marion Tucker.
Officials: Bob Fredette, Priscilla Davis, Yvonne Boness, Ernest Mackness Jr.
Backup timing: New Wave Swim Club.
Thank you also to the New Wave Swim
Club parents who also helped with meet check-in and running.
Concessions: Wheaton Synchronized Swim Team
A Special thanks to Wheaton Coach: JP Gowdy, was a great help in taking care of
everything for us.
Thank you to Ed Gendreau for all his hard work organizing, planning and running the meet as the first Colonies Zone Meet at Wheaton.
If you didn't make it to this meet please consider joining us this spring for the Short Course Yards Championships at Harvard! Harvard University’s Blodgett Pool is one of the premier facilities in New England. The water is fast, and there is plenty of space to relax between races. Not to mention the variety of restaurants, exciting night life and shopping to be found in downtown Cambridge after the races. And don’t forget to sign up for the exciting 1-Hour Swim in January!
